Fort Gordon Guide

Fort Gordon is a 55,596-acre Army installation just southwest of Augusta, Georgia, home of the Signal Corps, the Cyber Center of Excellence, U.S. Army Cyber Command, and NSA Georgia. Post headquarters: 307 Chamberlain Ave, Darling Hall (Bldg 33720), Fort Gordon, GA 30905.

First things first: it's Fort Gordon. The name was restored in June 2025 for Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon (Battle of Mogadishu, October 3, 1993). The quick history: Camp Gordon (1941) → Fort Gordon (1956) → Fort Eisenhower (October 2023) → Fort Gordon (June 2025). Two places still legitimately carry "Eisenhower": the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center and Eisenhower Lakes Golf Club. Everything else is Fort Gordon.

What the post does now. Fort Gordon has shifted from an institutional training post toward a 24/7 operational cyber installation. Major tenants include the 15th Signal Brigade, 7th Signal Command (Theater), the Cyber Protection Brigade, the 35th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, the 116th and 513th MI Brigades, plus Navy, Air Force, and Marine detachments supporting NSA Georgia. Army Cyber Command moved here from Virginia in March 2020 and now sits in Fortitude Hall.

How big is it? More than 16,000 service members and 13,500 civilian personnel are assigned. One base guide puts the whole supported community (families, contractors, and retirees included) at roughly 80,000.

The regional economic footprint is big: a February 2023 Georgia Southern University study put the impact at $7.49 billion and ~32,000 jobs. And at a July 2026 briefing, Alliance CEO Dr. Tom Clark said $10 billion in construction projects will unfold around the base over the next ten years. Treat that as a projection.

The short version: Have a DoD ID? Use Gate 1. Don't have one, or need a pass? Go to Gate 6. And on a bad morning, give the gate an extra 15–20 minutes.

Gate hours are in flux. The official page has listed Gates 5 and 6 at 4:45 a.m.–7 p.m.; a 2021 Army article described Gate 6 as 24/7 when it opened; June 2026 local news had both open until 1 a.m. Hours shift with resourcing, exercises, and force protection conditions, so don't plan around any single posted set.

Visitor Control Center: Mon–Fri 6 a.m.–5 p.m., closed weekends and federal holidays, per the official gate page.

Coming as a visitor (non-DoD, 18+)? You'll need a favorable NCIC background check and a visitor's pass, both handled at Gate 6. Bring a valid REAL ID. Without one, bring two of these: Social Security card, current passport, birth certificate.

You can pre-register at pass.aie.army.mil (select Fort Gordon); expect a text within 2–3 days. Approved passes are honored at Gate 6 (left lane) but can't be used before the requested date. Drivers need ID for themselves and every passenger over 16.

The traffic reality. Gate 1 is the notorious morning backup. It serves the cyber/NSA workforce rolling in from Columbia County, and 0600–0800 gets heavy. The 2024 DoD-ID-only restriction was the installation's answer to that. Gate 6 absorbs visitor and pass traffic and can queue mid-morning around graduations or events. Nobody publishes official delay-time figures.

Start at in-processing: the Military Personnel Division at Darling Hall (Building 33720), the Soldier Service Center, 307 Chamberlain Ave. Bring every personnel record you've got: medical, financial, all of it. In-processing normally takes several days. One housing site lists check-in rooms as 207 for soldiers, 262 for officers, and 191 for students, plus after-hours sign-in at Building 25710 and a weekly Newcomer Orientation Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. in Room 188. Confirm all of that on arrival.

Household goods (TMO). Book through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil: create an account, do the self-counseling, schedule the move. DPS helpdesk: 800-462-2176 / 618-589-9445 (24/7). There's also the newer PCS Joint Task Force call center: 833-MIL-MOVE (833-645-6683).

One structural change to know about: the Global Household Goods Contract was cancelled in June 2025, and a new Personal Property Activity stood up at Scott AFB on May 1, 2026. The practical advice from Military.com: call the installation transportation office before doing anything else.

Dislocation Allowance (2026). DLA is a flat, non-taxable lump sum by grade and dependency status. No receipts needed. It isn't paid on first-duty-station moves without dependents, or on separation or retirement moves, and it's max once per fiscal year without exigent approval. Double-check these against the JTR table before you budget:

Temporary lodging. On-post lodging runs through IHG Army Hotels: the Holiday Inn Express in Griffith Hall (305 Chamberlain Ave) and Candlewood Suites (215 Avenue of the States). Both are pet-friendly: pets up to 80 lbs, $75 nonrefundable fee plus $7/night from night six, max two pets.

The FY2026 GSA per diem for Augusta (Richmond County), good October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026: lodging $125/night (Oct–Apr, Jul–Sep) and $110/night (May–Jun); M&IE $74, straight from the official GSA table.

The short version: All on-post family housing is privatized: Balfour Beatty Communities, branded Providence Family Homes. The leasing office is at 155 3rd Ave, Fort Gordon, GA 30905, (706) 772-7041. Roughly 1,079 units across seven neighborhoods.

Eligibility runs by rank. Service members start with the garrison Housing Office, which refers you to the privatized partner.

Pets: pet-friendly, large dogs included, max two per home, with breed restrictions; see their amenities page.

Waitlist reality. Wait times move with turnover. Listings showed "available now" floor plans in September 2026 rather than a blanket wait. Call the leasing office at 706-772-7041 for the current picture before you bank on a move-in date.

2026 BAH, Fort Gordon Military Housing Area. Check the official table at travel.dod.mil:

Does BAH cover a 3BR off post? Current market figures put Evans 3BR apartments around $1,685–$1,824/mo, Evans 3BR houses around $2,000/mo, and 4BR houses around $2,155/mo.

So an E-5's BAH with dependents ($1,890) covers a typical 3BR apartment in Evans, Grovetown, or Martinez, but it's tight for a 3BR single-family house. An O-3's BAH ($2,250) covers most 3BR rentals across the area. Augusta (Richmond County) and Harlem trend more affordable; Evans and Aiken trend pricier.

The pattern to know: Grovetown, Evans, Martinez, and Harlem sit in the Columbia County School District. On-post housing and Augusta are Richmond County. North Augusta and Aiken, SC are Aiken County (SC). The consistent word in military relocation guides: Columbia County is the preferred spot for most families, and its schools are the main draw.

The short version: The Augusta area runs roughly 15% below the national average cost of living. Georgia as a whole sits about 7.5% below national; South Carolina about 5.3% below.

Georgia vs. South Carolina taxes: the military-specific version

State income tax, headline rates. Georgia is a flat 4.99% for 2026, per the Department of Revenue's official updates. The standard deduction is $15,000 (single, head of household, or married filing separately) or $30,000 (married filing jointly). South Carolina's 2026 reform (H.4216) replaced six brackets with two: 1.99% on the first $30,000, 5.21% above $30,000 (minus a $966 subtraction in the top bracket), plus a new income-adjusted deduction ($15,000 single / $30,000 joint, phasing out at higher incomes). More automatic cuts can trigger from 2027 if revenue grows at least 5%.

Two Georgia notes worth knowing. Residents who paid state taxes in both 2024 and 2025 are eligible for a one-time credit of up to $500. And Georgia did not adopt the federal overtime-and-tips exemptions: up to $1,750 of each can be exempted from taxable net income instead.

Refunds. Most Georgia refunds arrive within 3 weeks; processing can take up to 12 weeks. First-time filers and anyone who hasn't filed in five-plus years get a paper check.

Active-duty military pay. Georgia taxes military pay the way the feds do. Georgia-resident servicemembers pay GA tax; under SCRA/MSRRA, pay is taxable only by the state of legal residence. South Carolina taxes military pay of SC residents; combat-zone pay that's exempt federally is also exempt from SC tax, with an extended filing deadline (180 days after leaving the combat zone).

Military retirement pay.

Property tax. Georgia: the standard homestead exemption (S1) is only $2,000 off assessed value (assessed at 40% of fair market value); many counties add senior exemptions. Disabled veterans (100% service-connected, TDIU qualifies) can exempt up to $126,526 of assessed value for 2026. The figure indexes every year, so confirm with the county tax commissioner. Unremarried surviving spouses and minor children keep the benefit; one-time application by April 1, auto-renews.

South Carolina: homeowners 65+, permanently disabled, or legally blind get a homestead exemption on the first $50,000 of fair market value. For disabled-veteran exemption specifics, check dor.sc.gov or the SC DVA.

Vehicle taxes.

Off-post essentials. A vehicle wholly owned by a nonresident active-duty member stationed in GA doesn't pick up GA tax situs. South Carolina lets temporarily stationed active-duty members keep a valid home-state license; SCDMV Form TI-006 covers driving on out-of-state ID plus military ID/orders or an LES showing an SC assignment.

Voting. The Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) at fvap.gov works as both registration and ballot request. States have to send absentee ballots at least 45 days before a federal election. Spouses can keep the member's domicile under MSRRA.

Start here: Fort Gordon's two School Liaison Officers, Building 44401, 44th Street, Mon–Fri 0800–1630, 706-791-7270 / 706-791-4168, are your best first call for school transitions, enrollment, and education advocacy. Their page: School Support Services.

On-post school. Freedom Park School is the on-post K–8 (Richmond County): 345 42nd Street (Building 43400), grades PK–8, (706) 796-8428, listed at around 608 students on Freedom Park's district page. Active-duty families living on post are zoned there; off-post Richmond County active-duty families can now apply too. On-post high-school students are zoned to the Academy of Richmond County. Confirm it with the School Liaison Office.

2026–27 calendars. Check each district's official calendar before you plan travel:

One caveat: Columbia County hasn't posted its official 2026–27 calendar PDF yet. The Columbia dates above come from calendar mirrors that agree with each other, so double-check against ccboe.net before you book travel. Richmond and Aiken dates are from board-approved district calendars.

Georgia HB 251 lets a parent request an intradistrict transfer to another school in the same district when space is available. You handle transportation. Check each district's HB 251 / school-choice page for local windows and eligible schools.

The short version: Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, 300 East Hospital Road, Fort Gordon, GA 30905. Information desk: 706-787-5811. The emergency room is open 24/7, with one big caveat (read the heads-up below).

A heads-up on the ER. In May 2026, DHA Director Vice Adm. Darin K. Via confirmed a plan to convert DDEAMC to an ambulatory care center. Inpatient care would close, and the emergency room would become an urgent care clinic (Augustatoday report). The House pushed back in its FY2027 defense bill with provisions that would block the ER closure (Augusta Chronicle, July 23, 2026). But the Senate hasn't acted, so the plan is challenged, not dead.

As of September 2026, the ER is still open 24/7. Official listings and local reporting agree. But this is exactly the kind of thing to recheck before you rely on it. The Chronicle's August explainer lays out what the downgrade would mean if it goes through.

Appointments: call the central line 706-787-7300 (alternate 1-888-239-6066) or use the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal (for those enrolled to a military treatment facility). Active-duty patients get a Primary Care Manager; non-emergency care your PCM can't provide needs a referral, including urgent care. After hours, the Nurse Advice Line: 1-800-TRICARE (874-2273).

Who gets seen first at DDEAMC: (1) active-duty service members; (2) active-duty family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Young Adult–Prime; everyone else (Select enrollees, retirees, DoD civilians) on a space-available basis. All patients can use the emergency department and pharmacies.

Care offers come by email and in the dashboard's "Time Sensitive Actions."

Start here: the Employment Readiness Program at Army Community Service, Darling Hall Room 224, 307 Chamberlain Ave, 706-791-3579, Mon–Fri 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. MWR/ACS runs a "10 Steps to Federal Employment" two-day workshop (USAJOBS navigation, federal resumes). Sign up at the same number; confirm the current schedule.

Federal & NAF jobs. Army-wide, Employment Readiness does career counseling, resume prep, and USAJOBS guidance. Claim military spouse preference by uploading your supporting documents (PCS orders, marriage certificate) with the USAJOBS application. No separate HR registration needed. NAF jobs (MWR, childcare, golf) post on USAJOBS.gov, where announcements list "NAF Preference: Spouse Employment Preference (SEP)" as a claimable eligibility.

Portable-career programs. The Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) connects spouses with partner employers through DoD's SECO career portal, entry level through executive roles. MyCAA provides up to $4,000 in tuition assistance (max $2,000 per fiscal year) for eligible spouses pursuing licenses, certifications, certificates, or associate degrees in portable career fields. Eligibility: spouses of active-duty and Title 10 Guard/Reserve members in E-1–E-9, W-1–W-3, O-1–O-3 who completed high school or a GED.

Home-based businesses. Fort Gordon's Home Based Business program lets families run businesses from Army quarters: hairstyling, home baking/meal prep, pet grooming and sitting, massage therapy, retail sales. Confirm it's still active before you plan around it.

Fitness centers. Three are active: Overlord (26th St, Bldg 25713), Nelson (Barnes Ave, Bldg 29607), and Torch (21st St, Bldg 21713). Victory has been closed for renovation since July 18, 2025. Everyone's been directed to the other three.

Pools & golf. The MWR Indoor Pool is a heated seven-lane, 50-meter pool at Barnes Ave, Bldg 21608. The outdoor pool ("The Courtyard," Brainard Ave, Bldg 36707) closes the day after Labor Day through Memorial Day. Closed for the season as of September 2026. Golf is branded Eisenhower Lakes Golf Club (537 Range Road); 2026 event schedules and tee-time bookings show it running.

Library & recreation. Woodworth Library: 549 Rice Rd, Bldg 33500, 706-791-7323. The official MWR installation map lists the Gordon Car Care Auto Skills Center, Outdoor Recreation rental office, Hilltop Riding Stable, Gordon Lanes Bowling Center, the Disc Golf Course, and a dog park.

Hours for the Auto Skills Center, Outdoor Rec equipment rental, Arts & Crafts, Warrior Adventure Quest, and BOSS programs change often. Check gordon.armymwr.com.

Also on the faith campus: the Chaplain Family Life Center (Bldg 38804, 204 Academic Drive) and the Religious Education Center (Bldg 39713, 257 39th St).

The opportunity. U.S. Army Cyber Command, NSA Georgia, and the Cyber Center of Excellence are on post. The Georgia Cyber Center is in downtown Augusta, and a deep clearance-adjacent contractor market sits within a few miles. For a transitioning servicemember with a clearance and cyber/signal credentials, the post-separation commute can be shorter than the active-duty one.

Confirmed local presence. The Georgia Cyber Center's own partner directory lists Leidos, Parsons, Peraton, Scientific Research Corporation, ECS, and the Cyber Fusion Innovation Center (DEFENSEWERX). The January 13, 2026 Fort Gordon TAP job fair drew Parsons, Peraton, Cisco, Spherion, Akima, SOSi, Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), DataPath Inc, and GI2AI (official flyer). AFCEA TechNet Augusta 2026 (July 28–31) exhibitors included GDIT, Parsons, Booz Allen Hamilton, CACI, Peraton, Two Six Technologies, Tyto Athene, and Leidos. Exhibiting doesn't prove a local office or active hiring, though.

Longer tenant rosters for the Cyber Center's downtown campus float around on Wikipedia, LoopNet, and industry press, but they don't match the center's own site, so they don't go here.

Getting on post. Contractors and long-term visitors (31+ days) can get a DBIDS card with a completed long-term pass application signed by an authorized sponsor; requests can't exceed one year of validity. Visitors not in DBIDS may get paper passes up to 30 days. Ask your sponsor for the current DBIDS process before your first day.

Don't treat these as local employers: Deloitte, Guidehouse, TekSynap. Deloitte's official Georgia office list doesn't include Augusta, Guidehouse's Georgia presence is Atlanta-only, and TekSynap couldn't be verified at all.

Coworking/flex leads: The Clubhou.se (100 Grace Hopper Ln, Augusta); HQ/Regus at 823 Broad St, Augusta; flexible suites at 4290 Belair Frontage Rd, Martinez.

The short version: defense, healthcare, and manufacturing carry the metro. Unemployment was 4.0% in July 2026 (preliminary), down from 4.2% in June. LinkedIn's "Cities on the Rise" list (July 21, 2026) ranked Augusta #1 among U.S. metro areas for work opportunities, per local news.

The defense economy. Fort Gordon's $7.49B annual impact and ~32,000 jobs rest on a February 2023 Georgia Southern University study, still the most current figure available. The installation absorbed roughly 9,000 personnel between 2015 and 2023 with the Army Cyber Command relocation (completed 2020), and the Alliance projects $10B in construction around the base over the next decade.

Healthcare is a hiring engine: Wellstar MCG Health (the former Augusta University Health System since Aug 30, 2023), Doctors Hospital of Augusta (350-bed HCA facility, home to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center), the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center / Augusta VA Health Care System (downtown + uptown divisions), and Augusta University (7,000+ employees, reported). BLS: Education & Health Services employment was ~41.1k in July 2026 (preliminary), up 4.1% year over year, one of the metro's strongest-growing sectors.

Manufacturing. Textron Specialized Vehicles is headquartered in Augusta (global golf-car and utility-vehicle manufacturer; a 2016 expansion added up to 400 jobs). FPL Food LLC runs a beef-processing plant in Augusta, but note the September 2026 announcement: a modernization/renovation cutting 183 jobs beginning November 2026, with full operations not resuming until early 2028. BLS: manufacturing employment ~23.3k in July 2026 (preliminary), +1.7% YoY. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), the Savannah River Site's management contractor in Aiken, SC, is a top regional employer and partners with Fort Gordon's Career Skills Program.

The cyber pipeline. The region's single biggest structural advantage; see section 14.

Healthcare careers. See section 15: 41.1k sector jobs, +4.1% YoY, with Wellstar MCG, Doctors Hospital (HCA), and the VA system.

The Masters. Augusta National recruits seasonal workers through its official tournament jobs portal (jobs.masters.com): hospitality, merchandise, culinary, servers, barbacks for the 2027 Masters (April 3–11, 2027). Availability for all tournament dates is mandatory; applicants must be 16+ by March 26, 2027.

On the landlord side, the Masters-week rental figures (via a RotoGrinders analysis of 1,000+ listings): average five-night stay $6,744 combined across Airbnb + Booking.com for April 8–13, 2026 (Airbnb avg $7,844; Booking avg $5,643), vs. $4,316 the week before and $1,864 the week after. GolfDigest reports homes under 3 miles from Augusta National renting for ~$30,000 for the week. And the "Augusta Rule" (IRC §280A(g)) lets homeowners rent up to 14 days a year tax-free.

Transition resources.

• Career Skills Program (CSP): places transitioning servicemembers in internships with local employers, including Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and SOFtact Solutions.
• DoD SkillBridge fellowships are advertised locally: Parsons lists SkillBridge transition fellowships; Peraton's military careers page lists TAP, DoD SkillBridge, Hiring Our Heroes, and MSEP partnerships.
• Augusta Vet Center: 2050 Walton Way, Suite 100, 706-729-5762: no-cost counseling for veterans, servicemembers, and families.

This section sticks to official data. The official tables don't go down to zip-code or block level, so this guide makes no corridor- or zip-level safety claims. For block-level detail, pull the live FBI Crime Data Explorer or the Richmond County Sheriff's Office crime viewer.

What the official data does say (GBI 2024 UCR, the most current full year):

Richmond County's index-crime rate was roughly 6.5× Columbia County's. It sits well above the GA-side MSA average (~2,426/100k); Columbia sits well below it. The GBI report covers Georgia counties only. Aiken and Edgefield Counties (SC) aren't in it, so the metro picture is incomplete without SC data.

Trend notes: Georgia's statewide violent crime fell 6.1% and property crime 14.2% from 2024 to 2025 per FBI data (WJBF, Sep 2026). Major crime categories tracked by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office are down overall versus the same point last year, but Sheriff Eugene Brantley says car break-ins remain the standout problem (WJBF, Sep 16, 2026). Lock your vehicles, don't leave valuables visible.

The practical takeaway. The county-level contrast is clear: crime concentrates in Richmond County, and Columbia County communities run dramatically lower. Within Richmond County, including Augusta, neighborhood choice matters, and that's exactly where official block-level data (not this guide) should inform your decision.
