What's happening in Grovetown right now

  • The county's first hospital opened. Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center opened to patients on August 26, 2026: 100 beds at 5000 Gateway Boulevard, off I-20 Exit 190. It is Columbia County's first hospital. A 92,000-square-foot medical office building with 11 outpatient clinics was expected to follow in November 2026. (Becker's Hospital Review; Augusta Chronicle)
  • The mayor's office is in flux. Mayor Gary Jones resigned in March 2026, and Eric Blair continued as mayor pro tem. • The school tax rate fell again. The Columbia County Board of Education approved a 14.997-mill rollback for 2026, the sixth consecutive year of reductions. The district's 2025 graduation rate was 92.96 percent. (ccboe.net)
  • The town keeps growing. Grovetown's estimated population reached 17,939 on July 1, 2025, up from 15,577 in the 2020 Census. Almost all of the growth is residential, which is why the town feels newer than its 1881 incorporation date suggests. (Census QuickFacts)

The longer story

Grovetown is the town closest to Fort Gordon's gates, and it shows. Most of the housing stock is subdivisions, most of the growth is recent, and most of the dinner-table conversation is about the commute. It trades character for convenience: the shortest drive to post, newer homes, and Columbia County schools.

That growth had one big missing piece for years: a hospital. Residents drove to Augusta for serious care. The Wellstar opening in August 2026 changed that, and it changes the local job mix too.

Housing still runs cheaper than Evans. Homes.com put Grovetown's median sale price at $319,462 in summer 2026, with townhouses around $245,900. The tradeoff the town keeps working through is growth pains: new subdivisions, HOAs, and roads that fill up faster than they get widened.
