The short answer
- Location: Georgia, including Augusta and other communities in the 706 numbering region.
- Relationship to 706: an overlay. Both codes serve the same geographic numbering area.
- Introduced: 2006. The Georgia PSC's annual report records the rollout and the general start of mandatory ten-digit dialing on April 3, 2006.
- Local dialing: use the area code plus the seven-digit number. Your provider may require a leading 1 for some calls.
- Time zone: the Georgia numbering region uses Eastern Time. A person using or displaying the number can be elsewhere.
- South Carolina neighbors: Aiken and North Augusta use the 803 / 839 overlay region, not the Georgia 706 / 762 region.
Start with the four-code quick check, or read the explanations below. The Georgia PSC overlay explanation, PSC's 2006 report and carrier area-code information support the Georgia summary.
Where 762 covers
762 is not an Augusta-only code. Georgia's PSC names Augusta, Athens, Columbus, Rome, Dalton, Cornelia, LaGrange and Toccoa in its description of the 706 region receiving the overlay. The numbering territory includes separate northern and west-central parts of Georgia; it is not the whole state and does not replace Atlanta's codes.
For readers around Augusta, think of these as the main pairs you will encounter:
| Numbering region | Area codes | Local examples | What the code does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia's 706 region | 706 and 762 | Augusta and nearby Georgia-side communities | The caller's current address or whether the call is included in your plan |
| South Carolina's 803 region | 803 and 839 | Aiken and North Augusta | The caller's identity or whether the call is genuine |

The NANPA 706 / 762 planning letter documents the Georgia overlay. The 803 / 839 planning letter documents the South Carolina overlay; AT&T's 803 page identifies Aiken and North Augusta in that region.
An area-code region is not a mobile signal-coverage map. It does not tell you which carrier works at your home, and telephone numbering boundaries should not be treated as an exact county-boundary lookup.

706 vs 762: an overlay, not a split
THE LOCAL OVERLAY PAIRS
Two codes can share one region.
A comparison of numbering regions, not a carrier coverage map. Retained mobile numbers and spoofed caller ID can display a code from elsewhere.
An overlay adds another code to an existing numbering area. A split divides the territory. The Georgia PSC explains that an overlay leaves existing phone numbers and local calling scopes unchanged, while making ten-digit local dialing necessary.
That is why two neighbors can use different area codes. The overlay itself did not require people with 706 numbers to change them. It also does not mean that every new line must receive 762: available numbers depend on the provider and its inventory.
A useful real-world example: Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center publishes a main number beginning with 762 on its official hospital page. Our Wellstar local guide explains the hospital and how to find its official contact details. A published number demonstrates normal local use; it is still not proof that an incoming call displaying that number came from the hospital.
How to dial
SAVE THE COMPLETE NUMBER
What each part means.
The area code and seven-digit local number make the ten-digit number. The +1 adds the country calling code when saving a US contact in international format.

Save the complete ten-digit number, including its area code. For a US contact saved in international format, add +1 before those ten digits. The 1 is the country calling code; 762 is the area code within the number.
| What you are doing | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| Calling an ordinary local number | Dial all ten digits: area code plus seven-digit number |
| Using a line that asks for a leading 1 | Follow the provider's instructions and dial 1 plus the ten-digit number |
| Saving a US mobile contact for travel | Use +1 followed by the ten-digit number |
| Calling from another country | Use the international dialing method required by your phone or provider, then country code 1 and the full number |
| Using a short service code | Do not add 762 to a code such as 911; it is a separate dialing service |

The local ten-digit rule does not promise that every call within 706 / 762 is free or local for billing purposes. Your plan, service and destination determine charges. Do not infer a local calling area from the area code alone.
If an old contact will not connect, confirm the number independently, add the missing area code, and follow any provider dialing prompt. Office phone systems and some landlines may have additional access instructions.

Do newcomers need to change their number?
Moving to Augusta does not, by itself, mean you need a new local mobile number. If you keep your existing service, ask the provider about coverage and plan terms at the new address. Choosing a new local line and transferring an existing number are different tasks.
If you switch providers, ask the new provider whether it can transfer your exact number before canceling the old service. The FCC's portability guidance describes keeping a number when changing providers within the same geographic area. Transfers involving a move, a traditional landline or a different service area need an eligibility check; do not assume every number can move to every provider.
If you request a new 706 or 762 number, availability is a provider inventory question. The area code does not establish better reception, a particular carrier or a different quality of service.

Can you trust a local-looking call?
762 is legitimate. A specific call still needs its own verification. The FTC warns that scammers can fake caller ID so a call appears to come from a nearby number, a business or a government agency. People also keep mobile numbers while traveling or living elsewhere. An area code cannot locate or identify the person calling.
If someone unexpectedly asks for money, account access or personal information:
- End the call before acting on an urgent payment or security request.
- Find the organization's number on a statement, card, app or official website you already trust.
- Contact the organization through that independently found channel. Do not use the suspicious message's callback number or link as verification.
- Use the reporting route that matches what happened: FTC fraud reporting for suspected fraud, or the FCC unwanted calls and texts guidance for its complaint process.
These steps apply to every displayed area code, including 706, 762, 803 and 839. There is no reliable “safe area code” list. Read the FTC's phone-scam guidance and South Carolina ORS's caller-ID explanation.

FAQ
Where is the 762 area code?
762 is a Georgia area code sharing the 706 numbering region. It includes Augusta and other communities such as Athens, Columbus, Rome and Dalton; it is not limited to Augusta.
Is Augusta 706 or 762?
Both. The two area codes serve the same numbering area, so people and organizations around Augusta can use either.
When did the 762 area code start?
It was introduced as an overlay in 2006. The Georgia PSC's 2006 annual report records the rollout and the general ten-digit dialing change that began April 3, 2006.
Is 762 an international country code?
In an Augusta phone number, 762 is the area code. A US number saved in international format begins with +1, followed by the area code and seven-digit local number. Georgia here means the US state.
Is a call or text from 762 a scam?
The area code alone cannot tell you. It is a real geographic code, but caller ID can be spoofed. Verify an unexpected request using the organization's independently found official contact information.
Do I have to change my number if I have a 706 number?
The 762 overlay did not force existing 706 numbers to change. If you are changing provider or service location, ask the new provider to confirm whether your exact number can transfer.
What area codes do Aiken and North Augusta use?
They are in South Carolina's 803 / 839 overlay region. A displayed number still does not establish the caller's current location.
Does sharing an area code make a call free?
No. The calling plan, service and destination determine charges. An area-code match is not a billing guarantee.
