Start here: what the chapel community offers
Fort Gordon's chapel community is run by the Center Chaplain's Office, the Army office that provides religious support for the whole installation. Under that one office, several congregations meet in chapels along Barnes Avenue and at the hospital chapel.
Three things set the on-post chapels apart from every other option in the Augusta area:
- Many traditions, one office. Protestant services in contemporary, traditional, and gospel styles share the post with Catholic Mass, a Latter-day Saints service, Muslim Friday prayer, a Jewish Shabbat service, and an Open Circle gathering for Pagan and Wiccan service members. A family with more than one tradition under its roof can sort that out in one phone call.
- Free and on post. There is no cost to attend, no membership to join, and no commute beyond the gate. If you live on post, most services are a short drive or walk from housing.
- Built for people who just arrived. Congregations on a military post turn over constantly with PCS moves, so newcomers are the normal case here, not the exception. Walking in alone, in your first month at Fort Gordon, is something these congregations see every week.
You do not need to belong to a tradition to walk in. If you are unsure which service fits, call the Center Chaplain's Office at 706-791-7788 or 706-791-5653 and ask. Pointing people to the right congregation is part of the job.

Two Sunday styles anchor the Protestant community. The Network is the contemporary service at Friendship Chapel, and Faith Gospel follows it in the same building. Good Shepherd Chapel hosts the traditional service on Sunday morning. Midweek, a traditional service meets at the hospital chapel on Wednesday at noon, and a general Protestant service meets Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Whitelaw LE13 Auditorium for the NSAG and ARCYBER community.
One honest gap: an older official worship brochure, dated September 2024, also listed a Liturgical and Lutheran service at Friendship Chapel on the third Tuesday at 11:30 AM. That service does not appear in the July 2025 trifold. If that is the service you are looking for, call 706-791-7788 to confirm whether it still meets before you plan around it.

Catholic life on post runs through Saint Michael's Catholic Community at Good Shepherd Chapel, with a second Sunday Mass at the hospital chapel. Weekday Mass is offered at both chapels, at 11:00 AM at the hospital and at noon at Good Shepherd. The trifold lists confession at Good Shepherd before the Sunday Mass and on weekday mornings, or by request.

Religious education and weekly programs
Worship is only part of the week. The July 2025 trifold also lists these recurring programs:
- Children's Religious Education: Sunday, 9:00 AM, Religious Education Center, Bldg. 39713.
- Faith Gospel Sunday School: Sunday, 9:00 AM, through the Center Chaplain's Office.
- Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC): weekly meeting Thursday, 9:30 AM at the Chaplain Family Life Center, plus a Tuesday Bible study at 6:00 PM at the Friendship Chapel Activity Center.
- Catholic activities at Good Shepherd: Bible study Monday at 6:00 PM, Catholic Women of the Chapel meetings and knit and crochet on Fridays, Knights of Columbus on the second Tuesday, and a men's prayer breakfast on the second Saturday at 8:00 AM.
- Islamic Religious Study Group: Sunday, 3:00 PM, Friendship Chapel.
- Jewish Torah Study: Wednesday, 6:30 PM, Religious Education Center, Bldg. 39713.
- Latter-day Saints Gospel Study: Thursday, 6:00 PM, Friendship Chapel Activity Center.
Unit-level Bible studies for several brigades also meet at lunchtime during the week. The trifold carries the full list, and your unit ministry team can tell you which one is yours. Program times shift more often than service times, so confirm with the office at 706-791-7788 before your first visit.
What to expect as a newcomer
Cost. Nothing. Chapel services and programs are free. Congregations do pass an offering for the Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund, which supports chapel programs, and giving is voluntary.
What to wear. The Center Chaplain's Office does not publish a dress code. On any given Sunday you will see duty uniforms, dress clothes, and ordinary weekend clothes in the same room. Come as you are, and if you want a read on a specific congregation, call the office first.
Kids. Children's Religious Education meets Sunday at 9:00 AM at the Religious Education Center, Bldg. 39713, and Faith Gospel runs a Sunday school at the same hour. The trifold does not publish a nursery or childcare schedule for worship services, so call 706-791-7788 and ask what is available during the service you plan to attend, especially with infants and toddlers.
Getting on post. Services are on the installation, so visitors without a DoD ID need a pass. The Fort Gordon guide on this site covers gates and visitor access in full: visitors and anyone needing a pass use Gate 6 on Gordon Highway, home to the Visitor Control Center, and Gate 1 is open 24 hours for DoD ID holders. If family is visiting from out of town and wants to come to a service with you, build the pass stop into your morning the first time.
Arriving. Barnes Avenue is the center of chapel life. Friendship Chapel (633 Barnes Ave.) and Good Shepherd Chapel (421 Barnes Ave.) sit on the same street as the Center Chaplain's Office (471 Barnes Ave.), so a wrong turn usually still lands you at a chapel. Give yourself a few extra minutes on your first visit.
Counseling and support
Chaplains at Fort Gordon do more than lead services. The Center Chaplain's Office page lists confidential counseling for marriage, grief, and family stress, along with referrals to Army Community Services. The office also lists a Family Life Chaplain, based at the Chaplain Family Life Center, Bldg. 38804, for family and relationship support.
- Center Chaplain's Office: 706-791-5653, Bldg. 29601, 471 Barnes Ave. Office hours are Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The office is closed on weekends.
- Also listed by the office: 706-791-7788 and centerchaplainoffice@army.mil.
- Staff Duty Chaplain: 706-831-4797.
- After hours, urgent: call the Fort Gordon Installation Operations Center at 706-791-9747 and the duty chaplain will be contacted to assist you.
- 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988.
You do not need to attend a chapel, or share the chaplain's faith, to ask a chaplain for help. That is true for soldiers, spouses, and family members.
If you prefer an off-post church
Plenty of Fort Gordon families worship off post, and the chaplains know the local landscape well. This page does not try to rank or list Augusta area churches. The better first step is the Center Chaplain's Office at 706-791-5653: tell them the tradition or style you are looking for, and they can point you toward congregations that military families in your situation have found welcoming. Searching "churches near Fort Gordon" will also surface the large Grovetown, Evans, Martinez, and Augusta churches, most of which run newcomer pages of their own. Our town guides for Grovetown, Evans, and Augusta can help you sort out the drive from each neighborhood.
